2013 saw the Society take on ever-popular 'Chicago: The Musical'. Based on the book by Fred Ebb & Bob Fosse, with music by John Kander & lyrics by Fred Ebb, and based on the play 'Chicago' by Maurine Dallas Watkins.
The Oamaru Operatic Society warmly welcomed back Director, Duncan Whiting (MNZM), and Musical Director, Stephen Hinds. The dedicated cast and crew worked hard to bring another quality production to the stage of the Oamaru Opera House.
Set in the legendary city during the "jazz hot" twenties, Chicago tells the story of two rival vaudeville murderesses locked up in Cook County Jail. Velma Kelly is serving time for killing her husband and sister after finding them in bed together, chorus girl Roxie for bumping off the lover she's been cheating on her husband with. The cell block is presided over by the corrupt Matron "Mama" Morton whose system of mutual aid perfectly suits her clientele.
With the help of slickster lawyer Billy Flynn, Velma's incarceration is turned into a media frenzy, preparing her for a splashy showbiz comeback. But Roxie has some tricks up her own sleeve.
With one great show-stopper after the next, John Kander and Fred Ebb's classic score keeps the story moving along at gunshot pace.
That's Chicago, chin deep in dirty deeds, dynamic dancing and All That Jazz.
I'm gonna rouge my knees
And roll my stockings down
And All That Jazz.
He had it coming.
He had it coming.
He only had himself to blame.
